CERVIM heroic and high altitude wines

In Valle d’Aosta, since 1987, the research, study, conservation, coordination and valorisation centre of mountain viticulture is active. The objective is to promote and safeguard the production of “heroic” wines.

Cultivating vineyards on lands with slopes of over 30%, in small fields, torn from the rock and rescued from drops. Producing wine during tough seasons and with high running costs. For this reason, that of the high mountain, is called heroic viticulture. Only those who love these lands and are willing to do sacrifices can produce high quality wines, characterised by inimitable fragrances and character.

Such qualities should be preserved and protected.

To do so, in 1987, the Aosta Valley Region established a key research and safeguard center for the industry. Cervim was born, an institute dedicated to the protection and promotion of wine cellars investing in Valle d’Aosta. Its range of actionis international. Cervim is, in fact, the world’s reference point for all wine-producing businesses that operate under prohibitive conditions. Just think of wines from the Canary Islands, South America, the Pyrenees or Germany. This is a Valdostan excellence that protects and enhances traditional products.

The roles.

Moreover, among the goals of Cervim is also to facilitate the vineyard workers, encouraging the protection of the environment of the zones devotedto heroic viticulture.

This is possible through the promotion of wine produced in Valle d’Aosta (and geologically similar areas), enhancing its quality and developing research into innovative production techniques to support cellars. Fundamental is the spreading amongst the operators of new knowledges gained, for the benefit of the whole industry.

For further protection of the producers who have adhered to Cervim, the “European collective brand for heroic viticulture” has been instituted: the only institution certifying wines produced according to specific regulations under certain environmental and weather conditions.

“Mondial des vins extrêmes”: CERVIM’s winemaking concourse celebrates twenty-five years of age.

The spreading of the heroic wine culture goes through the establishment of international awards that make it known all over the world. Organised by Cervim, with the patronage of O.I.V. (Organisation International de la Vigne et du Vin), in collaboration with Vival (wine-growing association of Valle d’Aosta), the “Mondial des Vins Extrêmes” is the only worldwide concourse for mountain wines. Here you can find and get to know the stories of the difficulties and the passion of heroic production. The competition, each year, selects the best wines while safeguarding the production of small vineyards areas characterised by their uniqueness. During three days of sampling, judges from all over the world taste 740 wines from 360 different companies. On the podium of the Italian regions, we found the Aosta Valley, which, with 11 gold medals and 18 silver, this year surpassed Trentino and Lombardy.

The winning labels were awarded at the end of November in the splendid setting of the Fort of Bard, under the “Vins Extremes” event, the international salon dedicated to heroic viticulture. The tasting open to the public then allowed everyone to know the magic contained in a glass of heroic nectar.
